How to tailor your resume to a job description (step by step)

A 15-minute workflow: extract keywords, rewrite top bullets, re-score, and track what changed — without rewriting your entire resume every time.

Should you tailor every application?

Yes for roles you care about. A generic resume might work for easy-apply volume, but for target companies, tailoring lifts callback rates 2–3× in most cohorts we see.

You do not need a new resume — you need a master resume plus 10–15 minutes of JD-specific adjustments per application.

The 15-minute tailoring workflow

1. Paste the JD into a tailoring tool or keyword checker. 2. Note the top 10 missing keywords — skills or tools you actually have. 3. Rewrite 3 bullets in your most recent role to include those terms with real context. 4. Adjust your summary — swap 2 phrases to mirror the role title and domain. 5. Re-score — confirm you crossed 85+ before downloading.

Use Tailor to JD for a visual diff of every change.

What to change vs what to keep

Change: summary, top 3–5 bullets, skills order, role title line if equivalent (e.g. "Software Engineer" → "Backend Engineer" if accurate).

Keep: employment dates, company names, education, older roles (unless highly relevant), and any metric you cannot verify in an interview.

Track versions so you do not lose your mind

Save a version per company: "Resume — Stripe Backend — Aug 2026". When you get the interview, you know exactly which document they have.

ApplyVita's version history lets you branch from a master resume without duplicating files in Google Drive.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I change my resume for each job?

Usually 15–25% of the text: summary, a few bullets, and skills ordering. A full rewrite is only needed for career pivots.

Can I use the same resume for similar job titles?

Yes for closely related roles (e.g. Backend Engineer vs Platform Engineer at similar companies). Always re-check keywords if the tech stack differs.

About this guide
The ApplyVita Career Team

The ApplyVita Career Team builds the resume-scoring and job-matching tools at the core of ApplyVita. Our guidance is grounded in the same four-component ATS rubric our product scores resumes on — content and impact, keyword match, formatting, and skills — and in current recruiter and hiring-manager practice. Every guide is checked against that rubric before it is published, and updated as hiring norms change.
