Choosing a format when you apply abroad

There is no single international resume. Recruiters in every country want the same thing — evidence that you can do the job, in a document they can read in under a minute — but each market has its own conventions for length, paper size, personal details and the word for the document itself. A resume that is perfect in Bengaluru can look careless in Boston, and a two-page UK CV can look thin in Sydney. The safest rule is simple: format for the country you are applying to, not the country you are applying from.

Start with what is universal. Every guide on this page recommends a single-column, reverse-chronological layout with standard headings, achievements written as numbers rather than duties, and a text-based PDF. That is what applicant tracking systems parse reliably, and it is what recruiters skim fastest. If your current file is a two-column template with icons, skill bars or a photo inside a text box, fix that first — it will fail in every market.

Then adapt five things. Length: one page is normal for early-career candidates in the US and Canada, two pages in the UK and Ireland, and two to three in Australia and New Zealand. Paper: US Letter in North America, A4 nearly everywhere else. Personal details: the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and Singapore expect no photo, date of birth or marital status, because anti-discrimination law makes employers avoid them; Gulf employers commonly expect nationality, visa status and often a photo, because hiring there is visa-led; Germany and the Netherlands sit in between. Spelling and vocabulary: “resume” and American spelling in the US, “CV” and British spelling in the UK, Ireland and much of the Commonwealth. Work authorization: if you need a visa, one dated line saves a screening call everywhere — the exact wording differs by country.

Two traps catch international applicants most often. The first is sending a home-country document unchanged — an Indian resume with a declaration, father's name and 10th/12th marks, or a US one-pager to a market that reads it as thin. The second is the visa line: leaving it out (so the recruiter assumes the worst), or writing something vague like “no sponsorship required” when your permission ends next year. State the facts and the dates.

Finally, keep one file per market you are actively applying to. Editing a single document back and forth between conventions is how a CV with a photo ends up at a US recruiter. The comparison table below summarises each destination; each guide then gives the full rules, official sources and a sample. If you are converting from an Indian format, the corridor guides go field by field; if you are studying abroad or applying to study, start with the student guides. For the wording of visa lines across countries in one place, see how to write visa status on a resume, and for the letter that goes with it, the cover letter formats for the UK, Canada and Australia. FAQ

No single format works everywhere. The closest thing is a one- to two-page, single-column, reverse-chronological document with quantified achievements — then you adapt the length, paper size, photo, personal details and visa line to the country you are applying to.
