What a UK CV check should look at

A parser does not care which country you are in, so the score above works on any CV. A UK reader does care. Eight things decide whether a CV reads as written for Britain — two of them are scored by the scan, and the rest take a minute to check by eye.

  • A4, not US Letter

    Check by eye

Set the page size to A4 before you export. A Letter-sized PDF prints with odd margins in a UK office and can push a two-page CV onto three.

  • Two pages, at most, for most roles

    Check by eye

Experienced applicants usually fill two sides; graduates often need one. Trim older roles rather than shrinking the font.

  • A personal statement, not an objective

    Scored by the scan

Three or four lines at the top saying who you are, what you are good at and what you want next. The scan's content score reads this section.

  • No photo, date of birth or marital status

    Check by eye

Age is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010, so UK employers generally avoid anything that reveals it. Remove the photo and the date of birth.

  • A right-to-work line, if you need one

    Check by eye

One line near your contact details — 'Graduate visa, no sponsorship required until 2027', 'Skilled Worker visa', 'Indefinite leave to remain'. Employers check right to work before employing anyone; the line just answers the question early.

  • British spelling throughout

    Check by eye

Organise, analyse, programme (unless you mean software), licence as a noun. Mixed spelling reads as a CV written for somewhere else.

  • Degree classification and dates

    Check by eye

First, 2:1, 2:2 or Distinction/Merit for a master's, with month-and-year or year dates. Overseas degrees: give the qualification as awarded and, if helpful, a UK ENIC comparability statement.

  • Parseable layout and the job's keywords

    Scored by the scan

One column, real text, standard headings, and the vocabulary of the advert used in your bullets. This is exactly what the free scan scores.

UK job portals and applicant tracking systems

NHS Jobs and Trac. Most NHS vacancies run through NHS Jobs or Trac, and many trusts state that they do not accept a CV in place of the application form. The supporting-information box is what the shortlisting panel reads, so write it against the person specification, criterion by criterion. Your CV is still worth scoring — it becomes the source you copy from — but the form is the application. Medical posts can differ; the advert says.

Civil Service Jobs. Most Civil Service roles ask for a CV and a personal statement, and departments assess them blind. The CV has to be anonymised: leave out your name, contact details, and the names of schools and universities, while keeping job titles and employers. Guidance from DWP also suggests concentrating on roughly the last ten years.

Private employers. Large UK employers commonly use the same systems as their US counterparts. Each has its own documented rules: Workday never parses your skills, Taleo defaults to a 1 MB attachment, SAP SuccessFactors refuses secured PDFs, and Greenhouse stops parsing above 2.5 MB. Agencies often run Bullhorn, where your CV sits in their database for future roles.

Worked example: our sample UK CV, scored

Priya Nair is a fictional data analyst we wrote to test the checker: an MSc graduate in Manchester with a placement year, a Graduate visa and a part-time retail job. We pasted her CV into the free checker on 13 October 2026, made three edits to her bullets and a fuller skills line, and ran it again. The scorer is model-based, so a re-run can move by a few points; the direction is what matters.

Before
  • Analysed a three-month loyalty-app trial and presented the results to the regional leadership team.
  • Responsible for maintaining the data dictionary for the analytics team.
  • Helped organise the weekly stock count.
After
  • Analysed a three-month loyalty-app trial across 12 stores and recommended a wider rollout, which the regional leadership team approved.
  • Maintained the analytics team's data dictionary, documenting 120 fields so new analysts could self-serve.
  • Organised the weekly stock count for a team of eight.

What the first run flagged. Formatting was already strong at 90 — a single column, plain headings and consistent "Sep 2024 – Aug 2025" dates. The weak spots were a bullet that opened with "Responsible for", a trial with no outcome, and a skills line of eight items. The biggest gap the checker named was more quantified achievements.

What we changed, honestly. Each rewrite added a result the persona could defend in an interview — the number of stores, the decision that followed — and the skills line gained tools she actually uses in the bullets (DAX, data modelling, forecasting). We did not add anything she had not done. The checker still wanted more skills; we stopped at the real ones.

What the scan could not see. Her CV already had the UK details right: a right-to-work line, a personal statement, British spelling ("organised", "analysed"), a 2:1 and a Distinction, and no photo or date of birth. None of those are in the score — which is why the checklist above exists.

Notes for graduates and international students

Lead with the degree, then the placement. With under two years of experience, put education above experience, give the classification, and include a dissertation line if it uses the skills in the advert. A placement year counts as experience — list it like a job.

Say your visa status plainly. If you are on the Graduate route, you can usually work without sponsorship for the length of the visa; write that in one line rather than leaving recruiters to guess. If you will need sponsorship later, the Skilled Worker route depends on the employer holding a sponsor licence, so it is worth checking the register before you apply.

Convert, don't translate. Indian, Nigerian or other overseas CVs often carry a photo, date of birth, father's name or a signed declaration — all of which should go. Our India-to-UK CV guide walks through the conversion line by line.
