UPSC Civil Services (IAS · IPS · IFS) — Your DAF Is the Real Resume

UPSC does not accept a resume. The Detailed Application Form does that job, and the interview board reads it line by line. Here is how each field works — and how to prepare the questions your own entries invite.

Where your resume actually matters in UPSC recruitment

  • DAF-I — filled after the prelims result; it is what carries you into Mains
  • DAF-II — filled after the Mains result; this is the document the interview board actually reads
  • The Personality Test itself — the board builds its questions out of your DAF entries
  • Document scrutiny before the board, where every DAF claim is matched to a certificate

The UPSC format rules

  1. 1.You do not write a resume for UPSC — the Detailed Application Form IS your resume, and it is a fixed government form. Your only lever is what you choose to put in each field.
  2. 2.Treat DAF-II as a question bank you are authoring. Home district, graduation subject, hobbies, positions of responsibility, prizes, employment and service preferences are all fair game for the board.
  3. 3.Write hobbies at genre level, never category level. 'Reading Indian political biographies' survives fifteen minutes of cross-questioning; 'reading' invites the one question you cannot answer.
  4. 4.Your service and cadre preference order must be defensible out loud. If IPS sits above IAS, the board will ask why — and a rehearsed non-answer costs more marks than an honest unfashionable one.
  5. 5.DAF-I and DAF-II must agree with each other and with your certificates. A degree year, a name spelling or an employment date that moves between the two forms becomes the first ten minutes of your interview.
  6. 6.Before mocks, build a one-page DAF map: every entry in the left column, the three to five questions it invites in the right. That map — not a resume — is what you actually revise.

UPSC resume — common questions
