What is the difference between DAF-I and DAF-II?

DAF-I is filled after the prelims result and carries your details into Mains. DAF-II is filled after the Mains result and is the form the Personality Test board reads, including your service and cadre preferences. Entries must be consistent across both — and consistent with your certificates.

How should I write hobbies in the UPSC DAF?

Specific enough to be interesting, honest enough to survive questioning. Name the genre, not the category: 'gardening — native flowering species' rather than 'gardening'. Boards routinely ask how long you have practised something and what you learned most recently, so only enter what you actually do.

Does the service preference order matter in the interview?

Yes. Boards frequently probe the reasoning behind a preference order, especially when it is unconventional. There is no correct order — there is only an order you can justify. Decide it on real reasons, then be able to state them in two sentences without sounding rehearsed.

The UPSC format rules

1.You do not write a resume for UPSC — the Detailed Application Form IS your resume, and it is a fixed government form. Your only lever is what you choose to put in each field.
2.Treat DAF-II as a question bank you are authoring. Home district, graduation subject, hobbies, positions of responsibility, prizes, employment and service preferences are all fair game for the board.
3.Write hobbies at genre level, never category level. 'Reading Indian political biographies' survives fifteen minutes of cross-questioning; 'reading' invites the one question you cannot answer.
4.Your service and cadre preference order must be defensible out loud. If IPS sits above IAS, the board will ask why — and a rehearsed non-answer costs more marks than an honest unfashionable one.
5.DAF-I and DAF-II must agree with each other and with your certificates. A degree year, a name spelling or an employment date that moves between the two forms becomes the first ten minutes of your interview.
6.Before mocks, build a one-page DAF map: every entry in the left column, the three to five questions it invites in the right. That map — not a resume — is what you actually revise.
