PSU Executive Trainee via GATE (NTPC · IOCL · ONGC · BHEL · SAIL)
Resume Format for the Interview Stage
PSUs shortlist purely on your GATE score, so the resume does not get you in the door. Its job starts afterwards, in the group task and personal interview, where every project on it is probed at design depth.
Where your resume actually matters in PSU (GATE) recruitment
- ✓The PSU's own application, which is scored off your GATE score — the resume is not read here
- ✓Group discussion / group task and personal interview, where a bio-file IS read
- ✓Document verification and medical, where the discipline and marksheet chain is checked
The PSU (GATE) format rules
- 1.Your GATE paper code must match the discipline the notification advertised. A Mechanical vacancy will not accept a Production & Industrial paper unless that notification explicitly names it — this eliminates more candidates than the interview does.
- 2.Header line carries the three fields that decide shortlisting: GATE registration number, GATE score, and All India Rank, with the year. Put them above everything else.
- 3.PSUs shortlist purely on the GATE score, then interview. So the resume's job is not to get you shortlisted — it is to survive the personal interview, which means every project on it must be defendable at design-calculation depth.
- 4.Keep the technical vocabulary of the specific PSU: a refinery interview lives in unit operations, HAZOP and turnaround; a power PSU lives in boiler/turbine cycles, heat rate and O&M. Generic 'software-style' bullets read as a mismatch.
- 5.Final-year candidates need an explicit expected-completion line with the month and year, plus the provisional/bona fide certificate the notification asks for.
- 6.If you are already in government or PSU service, most notifications require an employer NOC at document verification. Start it before the result.
- 7.Carry every semester marksheet, not just the consolidated one — PSU DV commonly reconciles semester-wise aggregates against the degree.
Section order
- •Plant training: BHEL Trichy boiler auxiliaries (6 weeks) — economiser tube-bank inspection, drum-level control loop
- •Project: Shell-and-tube heat exchanger redesign — LMTD method, TEMA-E, 12% duty gain at same pressure drop
- •Tools: ANSYS Fluent, SolidWorks, AspenONE (basic), MATLAB
- •12th (CBSE, 2022): 91.2% · 10th (CBSE, 2020): 93%
PSU (GATE) resume — common questions
Does a resume matter for PSU recruitment through GATE?+
Not for the shortlist — that is computed from your GATE score alone. It matters a great deal afterwards, in the group task and personal interview, where the panel reads your bio-file and questions your projects at design depth. Build the resume for the interview, not for the filter.
Which GATE paper do PSUs accept?+
Only the paper code the notification names for that discipline. Related-sounding papers are not interchangeable — a Production & Industrial paper does not automatically qualify for a Mechanical vacancy. Check the paper code in the advertisement before you register for GATE, not after.
What do PSU interview panels actually ask about?+
The projects and plant training on your own resume, in the technical vocabulary of that PSU's operations. Refinery panels probe unit operations and safety; power PSUs probe cycles, heat rate and maintenance. Put only work you can carry to calculation-level detail.
