Google India hires freshers through a small number of well-defined doors — the STEP internship for early-year undergraduates, the standard software engineering internship, and university-graduate software engineer roles — and the resume screen is genuinely different from an Indian IT services screen. There is no NQT-style declared-skills form to stay consistent with, no 60% academic gate applied mechanically, and no keyword tower to match. What there is, is a human reviewer looking for evidence that you build things and can reason about them.
The most useful thing to know is that Google's own recruiting guidance has for years pushed one bullet structure: state what you accomplished, state how it was measured, then state what you did to achieve it. Google STEP
STEP — Student Training in Engineering Program — is Google's internship for students early in their degree, well before the standard software engineering internship. That timing is the whole point: applicants are judged on trajectory rather than on a portfolio, because a second-year student is not expected to have shipped production software. Applications open on Google's careers site well ahead of the summer, and the screen is a resume review followed by coding interviews.
- Do not pad. A second-year resume with two real projects and honest coursework reads better than one inflated with tutorials relabelled as projects — the reviewers know exactly what a second-year has had time to do.
- Coding-competition and problem-solving evidence carries unusual weight here because there is no work history to read: contest ratings, ICPC or Google-run contest participation, and a visible problem count.
- Put GitHub in the header and make sure the top repositories are the ones you want read. For STEP, one well-documented project you can explain in depth beats six abandoned ones.
- Write bullets as outcome-first statements — what you accomplished, how it was measured, what you did to get there. This is the structure Google's own recruiting guidance has long asked for, and most Indian fresher resumes invert it.

The mistakes that get filtered at Google
