Google Resume Format — What Actually Gets Shortlisted

Google India hires freshers through a small number of well-defined doors — the STEP internship for early-year undergraduates, the standard software engineering internship, and university-graduate software engineer roles — and the resume screen is genuinely different from an Indian IT services screen. There is no NQT-style declared-skills form to stay consistent with, no 60% academic gate applied mechanically, and no keyword tower to match. What there is, is a human reviewer looking for evidence that you build things and can reason about them.

The most useful thing to know is that Google's own recruiting guidance has for years pushed one bullet structure: state what you accomplished, state how it was measured, then state what you did to achieve it. Indian fresher resumes almost always do the reverse — they list the technology and leave the outcome implicit. Converting every project bullet to outcome-first, with one honest number in it, is the single highest-leverage rewrite for a Google application, and it costs nothing.

What Google's screening actually checks

  • Outcome-first bullets with a measurement — what you achieved, how it was measured, what you did
  • Demonstrable building: GitHub with readable code and a real README, a deployed project, open-source contributions
  • Algorithmic problem-solving evidence — contest ratings, ICPC, sustained practice volume
  • Depth over breadth: one project you can defend end to end beats a list of six
  • Clean global-standard formatting — one page, no photo, no personal-details block

The Google resume format rules

  1. 1.Rewrite every bullet as 'accomplished X, as measured by Y, by doing Z' — this is the structure Google recruiting has publicly asked for
  2. 2.One page for a student or new graduate; single column, PDF, standard headings, no tables
  3. 3.Strip Indian biodata conventions entirely: no photograph, no date of birth, no father's name, no declaration, no signature
  4. 4.GitHub and any coding profile go in the header line, not buried at the bottom
  5. 5.Name the exact programme in your application (STEP vs SWE Intern vs University Graduate) and pitch the resume to that stage of study
  6. 6.Quantify honestly — users, latency, dataset size, contest rank. One real number outperforms three superlatives
  7. 7.No cover letter is required; put the effort into the resume bullets instead

Google's named hiring drives — and the resume each one wants

Most Google fresher offers run through a named drive, and each has its own resume expectations. Find yours:

Google STEP

Who it's for: First- and second-year undergraduates (the early-career internship, not the final-year one)

STEP — Student Training in Engineering Program — is Google's internship for students early in their degree, well before the standard software engineering internship. That timing is the whole point: applicants are judged on trajectory rather than on a portfolio, because a second-year student is not expected to have shipped production software. Applications open on Google's careers site well ahead of the summer, and the screen is a resume review followed by coding interviews.

Resume rules specific to Google STEP
  • Do not pad. A second-year resume with two real projects and honest coursework reads better than one inflated with tutorials relabelled as projects — the reviewers know exactly what a second-year has had time to do.
  • Coding-competition and problem-solving evidence carries unusual weight here because there is no work history to read: contest ratings, ICPC or Google-run contest participation, and a visible problem count.
  • Put GitHub in the header and make sure the top repositories are the ones you want read. For STEP, one well-documented project you can explain in depth beats six abandoned ones.
  • Write bullets as outcome-first statements — what you accomplished, how it was measured, what you did to get there. This is the structure Google's own recruiting guidance has long asked for, and most Indian fresher resumes invert it.
  • One page, no photo, no declaration, no age or marital status. Google's application is global-standard; the Indian biodata conventions actively hurt here.

The headline, summary, skills and proof bullets — the parts Google's screen reads first.

Headline
B.Tech CSE 2028 (2nd year) | C++ / Python | Codeforces 1642 | github.com/… | Google STEP applicant
Summary

Second-year CS student focused on algorithms and systems. Codeforces rating 1642 across 40+ contests, one deployed project used by my department, and a first accepted open-source contribution. Applying to Google STEP.

Proof bullets
  • Cut the department's lab-slot booking time from a 2-day email thread to under a minute, as measured by 3 semesters of use by ~280 students, by building and deploying a Flask + PostgreSQL scheduler
  • Reached Codeforces rating 1642 over 40+ rated contests; ranked in the top 8% in two Div. 2 rounds
  • Landed a first merged pull request in an open-source CLI tool, fixing a path-handling bug that had reproduced on Windows for 3 releases

The mistakes that get filtered at Google

Rejection patterns specific to Google India's pipeline — not generic resume advice.

  • Using the Indian biodata layout — photo, date of birth, father's name, declaration — on a global product-company application where none of it is read and all of it costs space
  • Technology-first bullets ('Built a website using React and Node') with the outcome left implicit, when the reviewer is looking for what changed and by how much
  • Padding a second-year STEP resume with tutorial projects. Reviewers calibrate for year of study; inflation is more visible than a short honest list
  • Listing ten technologies at 'familiar' level. Depth in two, defensible in an interview, screens better than breadth you cannot answer questions about
  • Burying GitHub at the bottom of page two, or linking a profile whose pinned repositories are empty

Google resume — common questions

What resume format does Google expect from Indian applicants?+

A one-page, single-column, global-standard resume with no photo, date of birth, father's name or declaration — the Indian biodata conventions actively hurt here. Bullets should be outcome-first: what you accomplished, how it was measured, and what you did to achieve it, which is the structure Google's own recruiting guidance has long asked for.

What is Google STEP and how is its resume different?+

STEP is Google's Student Training in Engineering Program, an internship aimed at students early in their undergraduate degree rather than in their final year. Because applicants have not had time to build a portfolio, the resume is read for trajectory — problem-solving evidence, one well-built project, honest coursework — and padding is more visible than a short, truthful list.

Does CGPA matter for Google India?+

Far less mechanically than at Indian IT services majors, which apply percentage gates across 10th, 12th and graduation. Google's screen weighs demonstrable building and algorithmic ability much more heavily, so a strong project record and contest rating can carry an application that a services-firm gate would have stopped.

Should I write a cover letter for Google?+

It is not required, and effort is better spent on the resume bullets. If you convert each project to an outcome-first statement with one honest measurement in it, you have done more for the application than any cover letter would.
